The correct Prototype/LMP seating position
Prototype and LMP cars lay the driver back further, with the legs raised toward the wheel and the feet high on the pedals. The wheel sits between shoulder and eye level. It is a committed, low position that trades comfort for a low centre of gravity and a compact cockpit.
The graphic and values assume a bucket seat on an angle-adjustable mount, which prototypes effectively require. On a fixed mount the reachable angles differ; see the rig-setup basics.
Target seating position for Prototype/LMP
Backrest 34–45° · Hip 95–106° · Knee 120–135° · Elbow 90–110° · Head −10 to +15°
Raised legs need real support: without an angle-adjustable seat mount the thighs hang unsupported and tire quickly. Sit too upright for the class and the reclined ergonomics the car was designed around no longer apply.
Head balance is the one target that does not change with the class: it is set by gravity and muscle load, so the same −10° to +15° band applies to every car.
What each target value means
- Backrest 34–45° optimal — more upright and you sit higher and twitchier, more reclined and visibility and neck posture suffer.
- Hip angle 95–106° optimal — tighter compresses your torso and legs, more open and you lose support in fast corners.
- Knee angle 120–135° optimal — more bent and you sit cramped and lose pedal travel, more extended and you lack force and feel at the brake.
- Elbow angle 90–110° optimal — more bent and you sit too close and your arms tire, more extended and you lack leverage for quick counter-steering.
- Head balance −10 to +15° optimal — measured against the vertical, independent of the backrest: fall behind it and your neck holds the head up, sit ahead of it and the neck extensors carry it all stint.
How to check your own position
